Some of the best scientific minds in the world have developed skincare formulas to help women battle the effects of ageing, and they're available in products at many price levels. Always remember that the law stops cosmetic companies stretching claims about a product's efficacy, and in part the effectiveness of any wrinkle-zapper comes from your enjoyment in using it. You feel better, so you look better.

  • Elemis Pro Collagen products are definitely an investment, clinically proven to work and they smell wonderful. Pro Collagen Marine Cream (£75.00 from www.elemis.com) is their bestseller, joined this summer by Pro Collagen Wrinkle Smooth (£85.00) to target expression lines.
  • Borghese's Anti-Ageing Spa range includes Intensive Firming Creme (£55.00), Serum (£60.00) and Eye Creme (£42.00), available from Care Co at selected House of Fraser stores (tel: 01273 408800).
  • Jurlique's Herbal Recovery Gel (£42.50) - known in Hollywood as a facelift in a bottle! - and Neck Serum (£50.00) are made from certified organic ingredients.
  • If you prefer organic, there are Catherine Everest hand-blended and hand-bottled essential oils and No 1 Blend (rose absolute, frankincense and lavender) Face and Body Lotion (£25.00). Her Luxurious Face Oil (£15.00 from www.catherineeverest.com) with rose otto helps plump skin and reduces the appearance of fine lines and thread veins.

Of course there are dozens of moisturisers in many forms on the market, from lotions and creams to serums and the latest gels. In many ways, you get out what you put in, especially in terms of dedicated application. Don't expect miracles if you only ever slap on a dash of moisturiser when you get of the shower. But you can cheat with St Ives 24 Hour Body lotion (£4.99).

My feet need help!

Q: My feet are starting to look their age - I hated having to bare them in sandals this summer.

There's a significant difference between treating your feet, as in pampering them, and treating a genuine problem such as athlete's foot or an infected toenail. If you're concerned or have a persistent problem, see a doctor, a chiropodist or your local pharmacist.

Sadly we tend to ignore our feet until they make their problems felt, or we pull out a pair of strappy shoes. Being kind to your feet doesn't only pay off in terms of softer skin and beautiful nails...

Soak your feet once a week and treat them to a regular massage with a rich moisturiser. Or you could indulge them by lavishing on foot cream before you go to bed and sleeping in cotton socks to maximise results.

It's important always to use dedicated foot products because they're created to deal with hard skin, calluses and the bacteria that cause odours.

  • Beauty Naturals (www.beautynaturals.com) has a range of feet treats and treatments including Thursday Plantation Tea Tree Fungal Gel (£6.00) for athlete's foot, as well as Thursday Plantation Foot Spray (£4.20) and Foot Powder (£5.30), which control odour. On the same site is Martha Hill Foot Treatment Cream (£3.10), which moisturises and helps prevent infection.
  • If you already have foot problems caused by, say, diabetes, there's Eucerin Dry Skin Relief Foot Cream with 10 per cent urea that helps feet retain moisture.
  • Give hot, tired feet an instant pick-me-up with Sanctuary Spa Exfoliating Foot Wipes (£5.00 for 20).
  • And if you want to give your feet an instant lift, try the tester's favourite, Superdrug's lemony Conditioning Foot Spray (£2.99) from a range including foot scrub, lotion, intensive moisturising cream, cooling foot and leg spray and reviving foot massage gel (all £2.99 each), plus relaxing liquid foot soak (£1.75) (see www.superdrug.com).

Beauty the organic way

Q: I prefer to eat organic food - where can I find organic beauty and skincare ranges?

  • The Organic Pharmacy (www.theorganicpharmacy.com) range includes Anti Oxidant Face Cream (£35.00) for toning the face, neck and décolleté.
  • Spiezia Organic (www.spieziaorganics.com) is the only 100 per cent organic, Soil Association accredited skincare line in the UK, also accredited by the Vegetarian Society. Products are handmade in Cornwall.
  • The Jurlique range is from South Australia (www.jurlique.co.uk).
  • Beauty Without Cruelty (tel: 0800 146615) products are suitable for vegetarians and vegans.
  • Or try a skin moisturiser that works from the inside out - Udo's Choice Ultimate Oil Blend (£8.95 - tel: 0800 146615) can be added to food or fruit juice and is suitable for vegetarians or vegans.

Faking it

Q: I like the idea of fake tan - subtle, not orange - is that possible?

Once again, practice makes perfect, as well as patience finding a fake tan or 'glow' make-up that suits your skin tone and budget. The best advice when faking a tan at home is to build slowly. If you want a touch of colour for a special occasion, fake it the day before so you have time to correct any mistakes. For permanent colour, apply a little and often to keep it natural.

  • The Elemis bestseller Total Glow Self Tan Cream (£19.00) for face and body provides a realistic tan, at whatever depth you prefer, in three hours.
  • For a subtle look try Rimmel Sunshimmer Face & Body Bronzer Self Tan Gel (£4.99), which smells good and has a silky feel, or Rimmel Sunshimmer Sexy Legs (£4.99) in bronze or golden, which washes off.
  • Do you prefer a spray, wipe, lotion, foam or gel? RoC's Minsesol Bronze spray (£12.95 or £11.95 for lotion) makes application simple.
  • Decléor Hydrating Self Tanning Milk SPF8 (£20.00) is gentle on the skin and creates a light tan.

Unless specifically indicated, all products are available from high street beauty counters. All information correct as Woman's World went to press in 2005/06.
