Massage message

We might spend hours fluffing and buffing our hair but forget entirely the most important part - the follicles in our scalp. Regular massage stimulates blood circulation and keeps follicles 'fit'. Using both hands with stiff fingers and firm pressure, generate a circular motion to move your whole scalp (not your hair).

If you're doing this effectively, you'll feel only your scalp moving around, not your entire head. Better still, let a professional do the work to give you the relaxing benefit of a head massage.

Shampoo shopping

  • Fancy a fragrant daily wash? Original Source shampoos include romantic and uplifting Rose & Geranium or restorative Tea Tree & Lavender.
  • Neutrogena's Clean Reviving Shampoo, used weekly, removes residue from hair products, while Clean Volumising Shampoo and Conditioner leave hair feeling thicker.
  • To brighten grey or white hair by neutralising yellow tones, try products like Clynol's Reflex Silver Shampoo or Andrew Collinge Blonde Mousse, which caters for grey too.
  • You don't have to have long hair to try Garnier Fructis Long & Strong Fortifying Shampoo, which promises to make hair 'twice as strong'.
  • Don't want to colour your hair but fancy improving what you've already got? There are plenty of shampoos dedicated to different hair colours, such as Timotei Henna Copper Radiance for mid to dark brown hair.
  • Is hard water making your hair even more dull? Klorane's Citrus Pulp shampoo, conditioner and leave-in conditioning spray should leave hair smooth and shiny. Klorane also have a Cornflower shampoo that revives, adds volume and detangles grey hair.
  • Go organic... Green People's Intensive Repair Shampoo uses beer yeast and the nutrient panthenol, derived from vitamin B, to rescue chemically treated and blow-dried hair.

Conditioner choice

  • TIGI Catwalk Thickening Cream is heat-activated to create volume and shine, plus it contains juniper berries to promote hair growth.
  • Designed specially for mature hair, the Trevor Sorbie Professional Rejuvenate collection, exclusive to Boots, includes Volumising Conditioner with cashmere and silk proteins for fine or thinning hair.
  • Andrew Collinge's 1 Minute Wonder Deep Conditioning Treatment works to quench your hair's thirst while you're in the shower.
  • Condition with a clear conscience ... Body Shop's
  • Honey Moisturising conditioner contains Community Traded honey from Zambia (and the partner shampoo has brazil nut oil from Brazil and Peru).

Special needs

  • Swimmers need protection from chlorine which bonds to hair and damages the protective outer layer, leaving it dry, brittle and dull - tackled by Ultra Swim's Protective or Revitalising shampoos and conditioners.
  • Richard Ward Rescue Me Energising Repair Masque, exclusive to Tesco, boosts the vitality of the hair shaft and follicles.
  • Beauty Sleep Night Mask for stressed or extremely dry hair from SEAH Hairspa, a salon range form Schwarzkopf Professional, is a fast-drying gel used overnight to restructure even fine hair.
  • Sealed Ends promises that regular use can reduce new split ends by up to 90 per cent - from Bonacure's Repair Zone range.
  • Molton Brown's Ziao Jao Healthy Hairwash, which matches hair's natural pH of 5.5, promotes a healthy scalp as well as shiny hair.
