Bedtime need never be boring again! Jane Garner looks at the latest in night-time and loungewear. After years in the doldrums, nightwear is back on fashion's radar, especially for autumn. But while nobody was watching, somebody changed the rules! Formal pyjamas with matching masculine dressing gowns have become a favourite with the fashion-conscious. Women who might previously have favoured something sensible for after-dark are opting for shorty, naughty, downright sexy styles. And in between there's something for everyone in the all-encompassing 'loungewear' collections that double for relaxing and sleeping. A revolution in fabrics has transformed nightwear collections. Silk, always the queen of fabrics for sensuous elegance, is more accessible price-wise, easily washable and comes in all the latest seasonal colours. Cashmere, again once reserved for those with a big budget, is used in mixes and utterly pure in the softest, lightest designs at a range of prices. But manmade yarns have brought the greatest delights in feather-light fleece robes, cotton-elastane mixes that won't bag across the backside or knees when you curl up on the sofa, and exquisite fakes from fur to faux silks and velvets. The revival of interest in nightwear, including slippers, could be attributed to teenagers who have adopted 'sleepover style' with great delight. Their latest love, echoing their year-round dedication to sheepskin Ugg boots, is the soft ankle-covering footwear that looks like baby bootees for grown ups. Experts in the nightwear industry confirm that how a woman dresses in public is no indicator of her preferences for night-time apparel and lingerie.
